Theatre to OTT in 2026: How Long Every Indian Film Waited

Original TechnoFlix dataset of 75 Indian films from 2026: median 35 days from theatre to OTT. Tamil and Telugu 28 days, Hindi 56. Full table, charts and CSV.

Original TechnoFlix research. Dataset compiled October 16, 2026: 75 films with verified dates, released in theatres between 1 January and 10 September 2026.

“When is it coming to OTT?” is the most-asked question about any Indian film. Industry reports say “four to eight weeks”, but nobody publishes the actual number film by film. So we built the dataset ourselves: 75 Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films from 2026, each with a verified theatrical date, a verified streaming date, the platform, and a source. Here is what it shows.

Key findings

  • The median 2026 Indian film reached OTT in 35 days (average 45.3 days). The fastest was Ugly Story (Telugu, 14 days); the slowest was Rakkasapuradhol (Kannada, 217 days).
  • Two magic numbers: 25 films (33%) landed on OTT exactly 28 days after release, and 17 (23%) exactly 56 days after. More than half of all films hit one of these two dates to the day.
  • South is 4 weeks, Hindi is 8: the median was 28 days for Tamil (n=25) and Telugu (n=13), 42 days for Malayalam (n=13), and 56 days for Hindi (n=19) and Kannada (n=5).
  • Hindi is strict: 13 of 19 Hindi films arrived exactly 56 days after release, and not one arrived in under 50 days.
  • Netflix runs on a timer: 25 of its 27 films arrived exactly 28 or 56 days after release (median 28 days).
  • Hits do not automatically wait longer: top-10 grossers had a median of 35 days vs 37 for other films. Language matters far more than box office. The exception is the biggest film of the year, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, which took 78 days to reach JioHotstar in India.

The split matches the windows that industry bodies have described (eight weeks for Hindi, four for the South), and our data shows how tightly it is followed. 14 of 25 Tamil films streamed exactly 28 days after release. Malayalam sits in between, with a median of 42 days and the widest spread among the southern languages (28 to 106 days), partly because smaller regional platforms like ManoramaMAX picked up some titles months later. Kannada has only 5 verified films in our set, including the 217-day Rakkasapuradhol, so read its average (95.4 days) with caution.

Netflix bought the most films in our sample (27) and was the most predictable: a 28-day median, with almost every title at exactly 4 or 8 weeks. Prime Video (16 solo titles, median 41.5 days) and JioHotstar (11, median 42 days) varied more. Films that went to several platforms at once (7, median 28 days) were mostly smaller releases: only one of them, Khalifa: The Ruler, is a top-10 grosser.

Hits vs the rest

We expected blockbusters to hold out longer in theatres. Overall, they did not: the 25 top-10 grossers had a median of 35 days, vs 37 days for the other 50 films. That is mostly because the top grossers in our sample are Tamil and Telugu films, which keep to a 4-week window however well they do: Karuppu (Tamil #2) streamed in 28 days and Peddi (Telugu #1) in 35. In Hindi, top grossers kept to 8 weeks (Border 2, Bhooth Bangla, Dhamaal 4, Cocktail 2 and Welcome to the Jungle, all 56 days), and the year’s biggest film, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, went to 78 days. Several of the biggest 2026 films have no confirmed OTT date at all yet (see the pending list below).

Methodology

  • Scope: Indian theatrical releases in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada, released in theatres between 1 January and 10 September 2026, taken from Wikipedia’s “List of [language] films of 2026” pages.
  • Verification: a film is included only if its own article (or a cited news report) states a specific theatrical release date and a specific date when it began streaming. Rights-acquisition dates, “expected” dates and announcements were excluded. Two major Hindi films missing from Wikipedia (Border 2 and Dhurandhar: The Revenge) were added from news reports (News18, Gadgets 360, iDiva quoting JioHotstar’s announcement).
  • Window: days between the Indian theatrical release date and the first Indian OTT streaming date. Paid rentals and international-only releases (for example, Dhurandhar: The Revenge on Netflix outside India from May 14) do not count.
  • Box-office signal: “Top-10 grosser” means the film is in the top 10 of Wikipedia’s 2026 worldwide-gross table for its language as of October 16, 2026. Those tables use trade sources such as Bollywood Hungama and Sacnilk. We do not label any film a “flop”, because reliable budget and recovery data is not available for most of these films.
  • Platform: the service named in the source. If a film launched on several services at once, it is grouped as “Multiple platforms”.
  • Limitations: the sample is 75 films, not every release. Films without a well-documented article are under-represented, especially in Kannada (n=5). Wikipedia pages can contain errors, so we link each row’s source for checking. Films released after early September had less time to reach OTT, which can pull averages down.

Yes. In our data, 13 of 19 Hindi films reached OTT exactly 56 days (8 weeks) after release, and none arrived in under 50 days. The biggest Hindi hit, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, waited 78 days for JioHotstar in India.

Which OTT platform gets films fastest?

Netflix is the most predictable. 25 of its 27 films in our dataset landed exactly 28 or 56 days after release, and its median was 28 days. Prime Video had the shortest single window (Ugly Story, 14 days) and also the longest (Rakkasapuradhol, 217 days).

Do box-office hits wait longer for OTT?

Not overall. Top-10 grossers had a median of 35 days vs 37 days for other films, because most of the hits in our sample are Tamil and Telugu films on 4-week windows. Within Hindi, the top-10 grossers had a median of 56 days, the same as the rest.

Where does this data come from?

Each film’s theatrical and streaming dates come from its Wikipedia article and the news report it cites, which is linked in the table. We also used news reports for Border 2 and Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Box-office rank comes from Wikipedia’s 2026 top-grosser table for each language. Download the full CSV on this page.
